Top Five Tips for Zombie Royale

5. Lighten Your Load. With zombies enjoying a boost to their speed as well as a Charged Jump ability, live Operators may want to trade in their heavy weapons for something that keeps them more fleet-footed. Get an SMG or shotgun in your hands and consider including Double Time in your Loadout Drop.

4. Disable, Disorient, and Attack… As a zombie, you want to do everything in your power to disrupt enemy Operators before you lunge for the attack. Activate your EMP Blast ability when you’re getting close to a target to destroy nearby equipment, follow that up with the Gas Grenade to disorient them, and then attack while they’re at their most vulnerable.

3. …or Just Attack. It’s all about reading the situation. In some instances, using your EMP Blast and Gas Grenade is too long of a setup, or maybe they’re on cooldown from the last fight. If there’s a nearby Operator who’s open to attack, forget your opening abilities and go straight for the kill.

2. Pedal to the Metal. Getting surrounded as you’re out looting Supply Boxes and picking up Contracts? Live Operators should consider picking up a vehicle or two early in the match. You never know when you’ll need a quick getaway from the approaching horde…

1. Begin the Cycle Again. It’s always a good plan to buy back a teammate who has been eliminated from the game, but in Zombie Royale it’s a vital strategy. Not only will your teammate be reinvigorated as a live Operator, but should they fall again, they’ll join the undead ranks once again, where they can continue to serve the squad…provided there’s still one left standing.

We’ll see you online.

Stay ghostly.

Evolution of Call of Duty Zombies 2008-2020

What "The Red Door" leaks tell us about Call of Duty 2020

While we still haven't gotten an official announcement for 2020's Call of Duty game, reportedly titled Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the first major leak has hit the internet thanks to some data-mining.

Last week, a pre-beta build of the game called "The Red Door" was posted to Microsoft's store. Some players were even able to download the files, and they subsequently data-mined it to find out more info about the upcoming game.

On July 19, data miner Prototype Warehouse posted his findings after investigating the files for The Red Door. While the end result was essentially just many different lines of code, the text itself hints at all sorts of things ranging from Call of Duty 2020's campaign, multiplayer, zombies, and even a connection to the popular free-to-play battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone.

What do you want to see from Call of Duty 2020 and future Warzone updates? Take our poll!

Campaign — The data mine included a bit of information on the game's single-player campaign with what appears to be mission titles and locations. "Ger," "Nam," "Nic," and "Rus" are listed in these files, likely referencing the countries of Germany, Vietnam, Nicaragua, and Russia.

All of these locations would make sense for a game set during the Cold War (which has been the rumor for many months now). Mission names like "revolution" and "siege" hint at some of the events that might happen as part of the game's narrative. 2020's Call of Duty game is rumored to be a soft reboot of the Black Ops series, so we can't wait to see how some of these locations are recontextualized under a new story.

Multiplayer — Prototype Warehouse also found several codenames for multiplayer maps in what is looking more and more like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. These codenames reference actual locations like the Black Seas, Miami, and Moscow. Others have more generic names like "cartel" and "satellite."

Obviously, we haven't seen any of these maps in action, but they do hint at the fact that players might visit America and even a satellite during the game. The Red Door is reportedly a multiplayer alpha, so we probably won't have to wait too long to see some of these maps in action.

Zombies — Following up on previous leaks, the datamine of The Red Door also confirms that the Zombies mode will make its return in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. This seemed like an obvious move, as a Zombies mode has been in every Treyarch game ever since it was introduced in Call of Duty: World at War.

Unfortunately, the datamine was pretty light on new details, with only the word "silver" being found. We probably won't know what that name is referring to until Treyarch and Activision unveil zombies for this year's Call of Duty.

The Warzone Connection — Activision has been adamant about the fact that Call of Duty: Warzone will live on outside of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and The Red Door's datamine confirms that. Warzone is referenced within the game's code with words like "forest," "ski slopes," "duga," and "Russia."

At this time, we do not know if these codenames are referring to map changes on Verdansk or a new map entirely. Either is possible, especially since Fortnite Chapter 2 has set a precedent on resetting the entire map. Apex Legends also has two separate maps in regular rotation, so Warzone could follow suit.

Still, this datamine provides several reasons for Call of Duty fans to get excited. We can only hope that Activision will finally announce it soon.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will reportedly be released sometime in late 2020.

Warzone Zombies Mode

Allegedly, the Zombies mode is set on the night time version of the Verdansk map. Potentially meaning that the Night Fall mode isn't its own mode, but rather a setting for the Zombie mode.

The Gaming Revolution theorises it's linked to the Black Ops Cold War Zombies mode.

The new mode is called 'Zombie Royale - be the last team with a human alive to win. Players turn into zombies on death, but can become human again by consuming fallen players hearts.

This is very similar to the Infection mode in past Call of Duty games and the Pandemic mode in Black Ops 4's Blackout.

The Gaming Revolution theorises that the gas is the cause of the zombie outbreak.

Zombie Royal announcer files have also been found within the game and they give us a clearer idea of what to expect.

Here's what we know about the mode based on these audio files:

  • Zombies are immune to the gas
  • An extraction dynamic activates towards the end of the game to finish it
  • Last human team standing wins
  • Consume enough remains to respawn as a human
  • Buy stations are on the map, presumably with the usual available buys
  • Buybacks are included
  • You can help your teammates defeat the enemy as a Zombie
  • There are 'Zombies abilities'
  • Zombie teammates can die permanently (until bought back)

There is also a Hell Hound execution in the Modern Warfare game files that could be added to the game.

Easter Egg

There's reportedly an easter egg in the mode, but the details aren't clear on what it is or what it's for.

A conversation file reads:

"Charlie Alpha 1-2, they're all dead, only they're not dead. Oh God, what have done? You have destroyed the samples, enter the correction code that will sterilise all the labs, just remember...AHHHHHHH."

"This is station Charlie Alpha 1-2, we're under attack by some crazed deformed assailants, we lost (Wallcroft?) to one of them."

Charlie Alph 1-2 here, hurts, he was dead, we were sure he was dead...but he got up, he killed (Santoz?) and (Kerny?) before we could take him down. Headshots seem to be the one sure way."

The names are not clear.

This has been further confirmed by @xXNanikosXx who has posted coding that reads 'dx_bra_wopr_zombie_easter_egg_sterilization_commencing_10'.

This is an audio clip which says “correction code received sample stations being sterilized”.

Multiple locations have also been mentioned such as:

  • Quarantine
  • Block
  • Decon
  • Facility
  • Generators
  • Scientist
  • Residence
  • Factory
  • Harbor
  • Chemical
  • Plant
  • Bioweapon
  • Lab
  • Headquarters
  • Shore
  • Comms
  • Tower

Is It Related To Black Ops Cold War?

We know, thanks to @_TomHenderson_, that there are at least two events still to come in Warzone that is related to the new Call of Duty title.

He believes that the Zombies event and Nuke event are the two points of focus.

Imran Zakhaev is supposedly at the heart of the destruction by using the Dam to charge the Bunker 10 nuke.

Theories have said that both the Zombies event and Nuke event will trigger the transition to Black Ops Cold War Warzone.

The two could be very closely linked if you follow the storyline of Warzone.

The Armistice is engaging in a conflict over a chemical weapon which hasn't been resolved yet. Players are also fighting over the limited means of escape, while Al-Qatala has smuggled a nuclear weapon into Verdansk.

It could be that in Season 6 the gas consumes the players, turning them into Zombies. In order to stop the outbreak, the nuke is launched to wipe out the map and all of the zombies; which starts the transition to the next map.

One of the shacks in Warzone references element 115 and could be tied to the Cold War's storyline. Whether that continues on from the past storylines or not is unknown.

It's also a great stage to reveal the Zombies mode for Black Ops Cold War.

Tom has also said that the timeframe for this is four to six weeks, putting it in the middle of the Black Ops Cold War beta.

Zombie References

There are lots of references to zombies within the game, ranging from weapon charms to subtle nods throughout Verdansk.

There was a zombies mode originally intended for Modern Warfare as well as a Spec Ops PvPvZ mode.

According to @ModernWarzone, there are multiple references to zombies in Warzone - specifically Zombies In Spaceland.

He's said that there are multiple references including:

  • Spaceland docs in Verdansk
  • Zombie round ending sounds
  • Howling near Dm and Prison
  • Screaming at Prison & Dam
  • Teddy bears throughout Verdansk
  • Zombie rat in Warzone
  • 115 on RCXD
  • The “gas”

It's looking very likely this mode will go ahead.
