The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses information from the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor to determine when an engine cylinder misfire is occurring. By monitoring variations in the crankshaft rotation speed for each cylinder, the ECM can detect individual cylinder misfire events.
Extreme cylinder misfire events can cause catalytic converter damage. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will flash when the conditions for catalytic converter damage are present. The Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) P0301 through P0306 (or P0301 through P0308) correspond to cylinders 1 through 6 (or 1 through 8). When the ECM detects that one or more specific cylinders are misfiring, the DTC for the respective misfiring cylinder will set, and up to 2 of the corresponding fuel injectors are disabled for a minimum of 30 s. The ECM will then re-enable the fuel injector and, after approximately 200 engine revolutions, will determine if the misfire is still present. If the misfire is still present, the ECM will disable the fuel injector again repeating the process. If the misfire is not present, the fuel injector will remain enabled by the ECM. In Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) system applications, if a fuel injector fault DTC is set during a misfire event, the ECM will not re-enable the injector.

What the P0300 code means

Most vehicles will have 4-6 cylinders. Each cylinder will fire a spark plug, one after another, in a smooth and continuous manner. The spark plug fires a spark, using the flammable fuel air mixture, and sets fire to the fuel. The fuel then releases energy that powers the crankshaft, which must continuously turn smoothly as the car is moving.

If more than one cylinder misfires, this will increase or decrease the revolutions per minute (RPM) of the crankshaft. If that increase and/or decrease is more than 2 percent, the Powertrain Control Module will store the P0300 trouble code.

If the percentage of the increase or decrease in revolutions per minute (RPM) is between 2 percent and 10 percent, the Check Engine Light will come on. If the percentage of the increase or decrease in revolutions per minute (RPM) is greater than 10 percent, the Check Engine Light will blink on and off, as to alert the driver of a more serious misfiring problem. The P0300 trouble code indicates that there is a misfire in random or multiple cylinders.

  • If the P0300 trouble code returns, the compression system should be checked. A fault in the compressor is rare but possible for this code.

  • If the P0300 trouble code still persists, there could be a problem with the PCM. This may require replacing or reprogramming. This is also rare.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0300 code

One common mistake is ruling out the possibility of a faulty cylinder, fuel injector, or PCM. It is also common that the diagnosis and repair of other related trouble codes, is not completed.

Other related trouble codes, a faulty cylinder, a faulty fuel injector(s), and/or a faulty PCM can all cause the misfiring problem.

How serious is the P0300 code?

The P0300 trouble code is considered serious. The reason for this is the resulting driveability problems that are present when this trouble code is stored in the PCM. Code P0300 is a code that is generated when your engine has a misfire that is not related to only one cylinder.

Sometimes this code will be set in addition to other codes such as P0301 which means that there is a misfire on cylinder 1 (cylinder 1 is the number one cylinder when looking at the firing order. It is generally the forward most cylinder on the engine.). If these engine codes are present as well the you should diagnose those first as they are probably causing this trouble code.

This code will set your check engine light and needs to be fixed as soon as possible. If it is not then you will probably need to replace your catalytic converter as well as the problem that is causing your misfire.

There are many causes for this OBD code. Since it is a "random misfire" or "multiple misfire" this means that the misfire is on different cylinders and not just one all the time.

How to Fix Fault Code P0300

This code is one of the most common codes ever. If you notice that your check engine light is on you should have it checked for this code. If it is flashing then it is almost certainly this one or one like it such as P0301, P0302, etc. These are codes that show which cylinder the misfire is located in.

Code P0300 Diagnostic Tree

The first thing I would do if the problem wasn't obvious by inspection is a full tune up. Many times this will fix this code. If you want to do more diagnosis so you don't just throw parts at it you will need to check each of the above items starting with the top four.

The two most useful tests for diagnosing this code are a fuel pressure test and cylinder leak down test.

Testing your vehicle fuel pressure is simple - All you need is a good fuel pressure tester.

A cylinder leakdown test is a little harder to do for the backyard mechanic because you need a source of compressed air. If you have that though, you can just go buy a cheap leak down tester. This tool simply puts shop air into the cylinders when they are at top-dead-center (they should be sealed at this point). If there is leakage at this point then you will have a low compression problem.

If you don't know how to check the items in the list above, you should take your car to a good auto repair shop. It probably will not (in most cases) cost too much for them to repair this problem.
