Make a Loopy Yarn Unicorn Wreath

This post contains affiliate links. Do you have a unicorn fan? I have to admit there’s four of us, my three daughters and I love all things unicorn. When I saw the candy cane wreath form at Dollar Tree during the holidays late last year, I knew I had to make one into a Unicorn Wreath.

Make a Unicorn Wreath out of a Christmas candy cane wreath form.

This is easily made in a couple of hours in the afternoon.  It’s perfect decoration for a unicorn birthday party or a little girl’s room!

Loopy Yarn Unicorn Wreath

Supplies

Directions

Wrap the candy cane wreath frame in loopy yarn to create the unicorn.

Tie the loopy yarn around the very bottom of the wire wreath form and then begin wrapping.  As you wrap, slide the yarn together to make it look full and fluffy.  It should take just about the entire skein to cover the entire wreath form and knot the last of the loopy yarn at the back of the wreath form.

Once you get going, you’ll be able to wrap it pretty quickly. It took me about five minutes to get it finished.

Make the Unicorn Mane

This collage shows how to make the Unicorn Wreath mane using a 2 1/2 inch tri color ribbon.

Next, we’ll make the mane.  I found this 3-colored glitter ribbon at Hobby Lobby which I used to make my unicorn mane.  They were actually 3-fused ribbons together, so I was able to gentle pull apart each color to make my main even fluffier.  I’ve tried searching online, but can’t really find anything like that.

Cut 7-inch long pieces and tuck them under the very edge of the metal.  I just eyeballed it where a mane should go on the werath.  You can add a dot of hot glue to hold each piece close if you’d like.  I found that unnecessary as the tension kept them in place.  Then, I found you could pull the colors apart on the ribbon, so I did that to make the mane look more full.

I would recommend buying 7/8-inch wide glitter ribbons in pink, blue, and green or colors of your choice if you’d like a multicolor mane like this one.

Make the Unicorn Horn

Print the pdf pattern and trace it onto the adhesive side of the silver (or gold) glitter adhesive foam. Then cut it out.  Before you remove the adhesive, practice rolling it up. When you pull the adhesive backing off, you don’t want the horn to get stuck on itself and be flattened.

Once it’s rolled up to your liking, then add some hot glue to the seam and hide the seam facing backwards.  Hot glue the bottom of the horn to some of the loopy yarn to keep it secure.

Make a glitter unicorn horn and a glitter ear for the Unicorn Wreath.

Make the Unicorn Ear

Use the pdf pattern and cut out the 2 patterns for the inner and outer ears.  The outer ear is made out of white glitter foam and a small ear piece out of the pink glitter foam.  Since the wreath is a profile view, you’ll only make one ear, and the inside both of the inner and outer ear will be shown with the glitter side facing forward.

Trace and cut the inner ear from the pink glitter foam.  Next, trace and cut the outer ear from the white glitter foam.  Remove the backing from the pink glitter foam and line up it’s bottom edge with the center bottom edge of the white glitter outer ear.  Add a dab of hot glue to the center bottom of the ear and pinch the middle bottom together to make the ear look more 2-dimensional.  Hold that pinch for a few seconds while the hot glue cools.

Eyeball where the ear should go and hot glue it down in the loops to hide the raw edges.

Make the Unicorn Eye

Make a closed eye with eyelashes for the Unicorn Wreath.

Take the small scrap of black foam and flip it over to the adhesive backing.  On that backing, draw out an eyelash.  Carefully cut it out and then remove the backing before placing it on the loopy yarn where the eye of the unicorn should go.

If you have small sharp scissors or applique scissors, it’s easier to get more precise.

Decorate the Unicorn

When I ordered these foam flowers, I really wasn’t sure what size I needed.  It was only after messing around with them that I realized I needed smaller flowers.  The original diameter was about 4 inches wide, so I pulled the inside of each flower out and got it down to 2 inches in diameter, which fit much better.

Remove the center of the flowers to make smaller flowers.

I used three flowers and hot glued each one around the base of the horn.

Add the foam flowers around the horn to secure it in place.

Lastly, I added a string of orb lights.  This is totally optional, but I have a thing for light up wreaths any time of year. I had picked these lights up at Target in the Dollar Spot.  This string of lights was only about 6 feet, and each orb was about 1-inch in diameter.

To add the lights to the unicorn wreath, I flipped the wreath over and gently pushed each orb into the loopy yarn to hold it in place.  Then,  I tied the battery pack on with a leftover piece of loop yarn.

Here is the light up version of the Loopy Yarn Unicorn Wreath

Now your unicorn wreath is ready to hang up!

Easy Unicorn Wreath DIY

A unicorn wreath hanging against a brown door.

This simple-to-make sparkly unicorn rag wreath is an adorable and whimsical take on a unicorn wreath. Follow the step-by-step instructions of this detailed tutorial to make this fun homemade wreath. From the multicolored mane, sparkly white coat, and fanciful ears and cone, this delightful unicorn wreath is a playful take on the great mythical creature.

Easy Unicorn Wreath DIY

The unicorn is an ancient creature that has been described since ancient times as a beast with a single large, pointed, spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. During the middle ages, the unicorn was a symbol of grace and beauty. The one-horned creature was frequently depicted as looking like a horse (most of us are familiar with this depiction) or a goat-like creature with a single horn in the middle of the forehead.

There are many mythical and magical stories surrounding a unicorn. The horn could cure sickness, render water clean and drinkable (a big deal before the age of sewer treatment plants) and neutralize poison.

Unicorns are as popular today as they have been for eons. People love to hold unicorn parties, make unicorn decor, and hang unicorn art on their walls.

This easy to make unicorn wreath is basically a rag wreath. The embellishments are small but powerful. You can make this wreath quickly, depending on how fast you can tie a knot. This is a great watching-TV craft project.

Easy Unicorn Wreath DIY Notes:

● A standard white broadcloth was used for the white coat. One side had sparkles, the other side did not. When knotting, whatever side you want to show as needs to face one another (so if you want the sparkles to show outward, the sparkles need to face each other when you are knotting). You can do a random pattern of sparkly and white, or count the knots and make sure XX amount are sparkly and XX amount are white.

● The horn is hot glued. You could staple it in place, or you could use goop. The goop will take longer to dry.

● White and Pink felt were used to make the ears in this tutorial. Other color choices would be red, blue, green with the white.

● The mane tulle colors used were green, pink, purple, and blue.

● The horn color used was gold. Other choices you could use would be silver or hologram.

● The body color used was white. Other color choices to explore would be light yellow or blue.

As you can see, you can make many variations to this wreath. The color choices to be used are completely your own.
