Super Mario Odyssey Sand Kingdom Power Moon Locations

The Sand Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey is one of the more expansive worlds in the game. And to reflect that, there are 89 Power Moons to collect throughout your adventure there.

Completionists will want to collect every Power Moon in every Kingdom, but it can be a bit tricky. Most of the Power Moons in each Kingdom won’t be accessible until after you complete the story. In the Sand Kingdom, you’ll only be able to obtain 69 Power Moons before beating the story, so be sure to come back when you’re done.

Kingdom 27 sand

Sand Kingdom Seeds in Super Mario Odyssey are an important item you can find. They are essential in your hunt for Super Mario Odyssey power moons. There’s three of them, and they’re scattered across the map. All three can then be planted in Tosarena Town to grant you the power moons. Because they’re so important, we’ve made our guide on Sand Kingdom seeds locations in Super Mario Odyssey.

Super Mario Odyssey Sand Kingdom Seeds Locations

Where to Find Sand Kingdom Seeds in Super Mario Odyssey?

There are three locations where you can find seeds in Sand Kingdom. The first one, Plaza Seed, is in Tostarena Town, left of the fountain in the town square. It’s right next to the pots that you’re supposed to plant the seeds in. The second seed location, Ruins Seed, is in the Tostarena Ruins. Go to the Tostarena Ruins Sand Pillar checkpoint flag. Then, head east, and drop onto the sand. Look around that wall, and you’ll find an alcove, with the seed inside. The third and final one, Seed on the Cliff, is the most difficult to find. Head west from the Tostarena Ruins Entrance, all the way to the place where the map makes an elbow. It’s just below the southwest corner of the Moe-Eye Habitat. Go to the edge of the cliff and look down. You’ll see a small section below where you can drop down. Once you find the seed, head the other way and use the flower to get up to the top of the cliff.

Where do you Plant Seeds in Sand Kingdom?

All three seeds need to be planted in the same location. The place you’re looking for is the yellow-and-green house to the left of the fountain. There are three flower pots. The Plaza Seed goes in the middle pot, the Ruins Seed goes into the pot on the right, and the Seed on the Cliff goes in the left pot. After you plant the seeds, you have to wait for a bit for the plant to grow. Once it does, hit the budding flower with Cappy to open it and receive a Sand Kingdom Power Moon.

Mario must enter the race and then reach the finish line in first place to be awarded a Power Moon. Available after defeating Bowser in the Moon Kingdom. 67 SMO Sand Moon 67.png
Binding Band Returned In the Deepest Underground, the player can find a glowing spot on top of the Binding Band. Mario must ground pound this glowing spot to obtain a Power Moon. Available after defeating Bowser in the Moon Kingdom. 68 SMO Sand Moon 68.png
'Round-the-World Tourist After restoring the Sand Kingdom to its former glory, the player should locate the Tostarenan Tourist at the Tostarena Town. Mario must talk to him here, which will start the Tourism side-quest. If Mario can find and talk to the Tostarenan tourist in every kingdom he visits, he will then return to the Sand Kingdom. Talking to the tourist here will reward Mario with a Power Moon. Available after collecting the "A Tourist in the Mushroom Kingdom" Power Moon (Mushroom Kingdom). 69 SMO Sand Moon 69.png
Peach in the Sand Kingdom On top of the Inverted Pyramid, the player can find Princess Peach. Talking to her will reward Mario with a Power Moon. Available after defeating Bowser in the Moon Kingdom and talking to the Toad outside Peach's Castle (Mushroom Kingdom). 70 SMO Sand Moon 70.png
Mighty Leap from the Palm Tree! This moon is found above the northernmost palm tree within the Desert Oasis grounds. Its height above the tree will require Mario to either use a ground pound jump, back somersault, or side somersault to reach it. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 71 SMO Sand Moon 71.png
On the North Pillar This moon is located on a tall stone pillar in northern Tostarena. The player must capture a spark pylon on either the Tostarena Northwest Reaches, the Moe-Eye Habitat, or the Inverted Pyramid and travel to said pillar. Mario must then release capture as he's riding the wire to fall towards the pillar and the moon on it. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 72 SMO Sand Moon 72.png
Into the Flowing Sands This moon lies in the downward sand flow in the west area of Tostarena Ruins. Mario will slip down if he attempts to climb the sand flow, so he must fall from the moving lifts directly above the sand flow to obtain this moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 73 SMO Sand Moon 73.png
In the Skies Above the Canyon To find this moon, Mario must board the moving platform from the Tostarena Ruins Round Tower. Just before the first platform descends, Mario must jump north to grab this moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 74 SMO Sand Moon 74.png

An Invisible Gleam This moon can be found in Moe-Eye Habitat, on top of the second pillar. To grab it, Mario must first possess a Moe-Eye and see the gleam from that pillar while possessed. Then, he can make his way to the pillar and ground-pound its center for the moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 76 SMO Sand Moon 76.png
On the Eastern Pillar As the name suggests, this moon is located on the easternmost pillar, sealed in a stone block. Mario must lure a Bullet Bill to the pillars between Tostarena Ruins and Jaxi Ruins, then capture it. On the way to the easternmost pillar, it's highly recommended that the player shakes the Joy-Con to cover more distance before the Bullet Bill explodes prematurely. If the Joy-Con are inside of the controller peripheral, it can still be obtained by jumping over a Bullet Bill and letting it continue towards the pillar before capturing it, slightly shortening the distance needing traveled. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 77 SMO Sand Moon 77.png
Caught Hopping in the Desert! West of Tostarena Town, not far from where the Moon Rock was destroyed, there are three rabbits. One of the rabbits is holding a Power Moon, whereas the other two rabbits hold either one or eight coins. The rabbits tend to run away in different directions, and the rabbit with the Power Moon will run northwest of its initial gathering spot. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 78 SMO Sand Moon 78.png
Poster Cleanup Although Mario defeated Bowser and canceled his wedding with Peach, 17 of Bowser's posters have recently been applied on the walls of building in Tostarena Northwest Reaches. Many of these posters are on higher reaches of the walls, and may require Mario to jump off of the nearby sand mound or the spineless cacti to remove them. Once all 17 posters are removed, a nearby Tostarenan will reward Mario with a Power Moon as a thanks. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 79 SMO Sand Moon 79.png
Taking Notes: Running Down There is a rainbow treble clef in the near southwesternmost corner of Tostarena, found nearby two large cacti. The notes that spawn form a straight line pointing northeast and last only 10 seconds. Given the rather strict time limit, Mario must ride Jaxi to collect all the notes in time and reveal the Power Moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 80 SMO Sand Moon 80.png
Taking Notes: In the Wall Painting On the second level in the 8-bit mural of Tostarena Ruins Round Tower, the rainbow treble clef is on the north facing side of the tower. Mario must simply collect all the notes to reveal the Power Moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 81 SMO Sand Moon 81.png
Love at the Edge of the Desert After capturing a Goomba at the Tostarena Ruins Entrance, Mario must go around the ruins and head northwest. After traversing a considerable distance, Mario finds the Goombette awaiting at the edge of the area, near the Tostarena Northwest Reaches. If Mario faces her as the captured Goomba, he will be given a Power Moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 82 SMO Sand Moon 82.png
More Walking in the Desert! After completing the previous round of Koopa Trace-Walking, Mario can talk to the Koopa Troopa met between the Tostarena Ruins and the Desert Oasis for a second round. This time, Mario has to score at least 90 points for a Power Moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock and collecting the "Walking the Desert!" Power Moon. 83 SMO Sand Moon 83.png

Finishing first over the other Koopa Troopa runners awards Mario with a Power Moon. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock and collecting the "Sand Kingdom Regular Cup" Power Moon. 84 SMO Sand Moon 84.png
Where the Transparent Platforms End On one of the two knolls rising between the Odyssey and Tostarena Town lies a Moon Pipe that leads Mario into a sub-area, consisting of an enormous corridor. Mario can capture the Moe-Eye at the entrance and enable its shades to reveal a series of invisible platforms leading to the end of the corridor. Soon afterwards, Mario comes across a wide platform that starts moving along the corridor when stepped on. As he travels on the platform, Mario must navigate a transparent maze whose walls may push him off. Once at the end of the corridor, Mario must jump off the moving platform and collect the Power Moon in front of him. A Moon Pipe leading to the exit is in the same area. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 85 SMO Sand Moon 85.png
Jump Onto the Transparent Lift At the beginning of the previous area, Mario can capture the Moe-Eye and look down towards the chasm and to the right to spot a platform lying close to the wall. The player can reach the platform by falling off a moving ledge. The platform starts moving once mounted, directing Mario straight into a key that triggers a Power Moon near the entrance at the top. The platform will then lift Mario directly by that spot. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 86 SMO Sand Moon 86.png
Colossal Ruins: Dash! Jump! Once Mario enters the Moon Pipe at the Tostarena Ruins Entrance, he is brought into a dark area bottomed by a poison lake. Here, Mario must capture a spark pylon to reach a rounding road that immediately starts collapsing in the poison. Mario must evade the sinking road by using several Rocket Flowers. On his way, he eventually has to dash on a huge curving wall, jumping over gaps in the road all the while. After a final stretch, Mario encounters a Power Moon and a long platform rises from the poison, leading him back to the start of the area. Even in Assist Mode, the poison instantly kills Mario if he falls into it. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 87 SMO Sand Moon 87.png
Sinking Colossal Ruins: Hurry! In the same area as above, Mario can collect a key located near the bottom of the inclined wall. It can be reached by sticking to the lower path, hopping several gaps meanwhile. The key unlocks a Power Moon right beside the starting point, where Mario eventually goes back. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 88 SMO Sand Moon 88.png
Through the Freezing Waterway At the north-eastern edge of the desert, east from the Inverted Pyramid, is a Moon Pipe located among several cacti and shrubs. It leads Mario to a side-scrolling section, where he has to navigate a channel with long stretches of freezing water. To do so, he must capture Gushens that keep him safe from the water, then charge forward, up and over incoming obstacles, mostly including pools of poison and moving platforms. The water in the channel allows Mario to regenerate the Gushen's water reserve. At the end of the channel, after a long stretch of poison, lie the Power Moon and the exit. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock. 89 SMO Sand Moon 89.png
Freezing Waterway: Hidden Room With a Gushen captured, Mario must use the first moving platform to fly further upward, then head to the left and dash through a long poison tunnel. At the end lies a Power Moon, accompanied by some freezing water and another Gushen to help Mario head back. Available after opening the kingdom's Moon Rock.

We also have Purple Coin locations for each Kingdom, and if you want to know what to spend it on, we have a hats list, outfits list, stickers list, a souvenirs list as well as a music list to kit out the appearance of both Mario and the Odyssey. Once you've finished the game, check out the free Balloon World update, too.

58. Jaxi Driver

From the Jaxi Ruins checkpoint, ride the Jaxi to the purple gloop swamp and ride it inside the platform you started on. Inside is a challenge room where you need to ride the Jaxi to the end without falling off the edge. Use 'B' to break, but only using for a few seconds - holding it too long will send you flying forwards. Moon is at the end of the room.

59. Jaxi Stunt Driving

When you reach the largest platform of the secret Jaxi challenge, turn left and you'll see a colourful clef. Line up so you're facing down the ledge it's on the edge of. Run through the clef, collect all the notes, brake around the pillar, and collect the next line. Moon is yours!

60. Strange Neighborhood

From the Tostarena Town checkpoint, turn right, run past the Jinx and around the house beside you. Use the jump pads to reach the Mini Rocket and ride it up to a bonus challenge. Hit the scarecrow and begin the challenge.

You have no cap so jump on the Goombas to dispatch them. The houses here are spinning platforms, so time your jumps to reach each one. When you hit the other side, the Moon is yours.

62. Secret Path to Tostarena!

In order to collect this Moon in the Sand Kingdom, you'll need to jump through the portrait hidden at the bottom of the pond in the Lake Kingdom (it's just by the Courtyard checkpoint). Press 'A' above it to travel to a smaller inverted pyramid above Tostarena.

63. Found with Sand Kingdom Art

Look for this art on the back of a house in Tostarena Town. Head to Bowser's Kingdom, warp to the Souvenir Shop and Ground Pound the spot show in the screenshot to get your Moon.

64. Jammin' in the Sand Kingdom

From the Testarena Town checkpoint, head right, past the Jinx, around to the side of the building beside you. Use the two jump pads to reach the Toad with the headphones. He'll ask you to play 'Memories of a Tough Battle'. This isn't the name of a track. Play him Bowser Battle 2 to get a Moon (you'll need to finish the main story to unlock Music List and this track).

65. Hat-and-Seek: In the Sand

Post-game, look for two worried looking hats. They've lost a friend and think he might be hiding on someone's head. Head towards the characters queuing for an ice cream next to the Crazy Cap store. The hat is dressed as a sombrero. Speak to him to get a Moon.

66. Sand Kingdom Regular Cup

Find the Koopa at the Tostarena Northwest Reaches checkpoint. This race is really easy. Jump on the Jinx, ride around the other side of the ruins and head straight for the village. The finish line is on the other side of the fountain. Come first to win a Moon.

67. Binding Band Returned

From the Tostarena Northwest Reaches checkpoint, head west and jump into the first big hole you find. Run across the arena, avoid the skeletons that appear in two groups and use the slingshot to reach the next platform. Ground Pound the giant ring to release the Moon within.

68. 'Round-the-World Tourist

This Moon is a more of a challenge than the others in this kingdom. Speak to the Tostarenan standing next to the taxi outside Tostarena Town. He'll then head off to the Metro Kingdom, the Cascade Kingdom, the Luncheon Kingdom, the Moon Kingdom, the Mushroom Kingdom and back to the Sand Kingdom.

Bar your first encounter in the Sand Kingdom, each encounter will unlock a Moon for that respective region. Return to the Sand Kingdom and speak to him again to earn this hard-fought Moon. This Moon can only be completed after the main story has been finished.

69. Peach in the Sand Kingdom

After you've complete the game, warp to the Tostarena Ruins Round Tower checkpoint, ride the Spark pylon up to the top of the Inverted Pyramid and speak to Peach to receive a Moon-shaped gift.

Other Sand Kingdom Power Moons you can unlock

As well as the above Moons that appear when you clear a Kingdom for the first time, there is yet another set that you can collect later in the game. Be warned the following contains some light spoilers.

When exploring each Kingdom previously, you may have noticed a giant, grey block that seemingly has no purpose. It's this object you must find once you have completed the game that'll give you even more things to do.

The above video by Nintendo Life explains this in more detail, but in short - complete the game, find the block in any given Kingdom, and more Moons will be available for you to find.

We won't detail these extra Moons here, but the number of these extra challenges available in each Kingdom varies - just like the amount of Moons you could find to begin with. Good luck!
